In this case, the Council\u00a0was planning a phased rollout of separate food collections to all households, in 10 phases spread over a year. This was to be incorporated alongside a well established\u00a0collection regime. Initial work by CH2 and the Council’s implementation team\u00a0discovered that\u00a0the base data\u00a0(based on the Corporate Address Gazetteer – CAG) was not fully up-to-date, and a lot of preparatory work was necessary to clean and cross-check property entries for each collection before the final master dataset could be signed off.<\/p>\n

This experience\u00a0highlighted a significant benefit of using the CH2 calendar system – that of independent review and validation of base data, before any calendars are sent out or\u00a0proposed new rounds are put in place. The value of this checking stage\u00a0became clear at roll-out:\u00a0the initial phases have gone\u00a0very smoothly with very little remedial\u00a0work or calendar re-issues required despite the earlier difficulties with the CAG. The final phase will be rolled out in the summer of 2014.<\/p>\n

As the Council was not able to predict in advance\u00a0the arrangements for Christmas and New year collections they chose to use\u00a0a feature of the CH2 system that can\u00a0outline\u00a0collections on public\u00a0holidays. This allows these collections to be\u00a0highlighted on the calendar telling householders to check\u00a0the media \/ websites for updated collection\u00a0information, to be published\u00a0nearer the time.<\/p>\n

This case is also notable for the use of\u00a0complex shape and colour codes for collections that\u00a0happen on the same day. The system\u00a0assigns shapes,\u00a0codes and colours based on the component collections, but editing tools allow modifications to edit the\u00a0text (to be shown on the key), the\u00a0shapes and the codes for maximum legibility.\u00a0 It is also possible to substitute\u00a0new symbols and colours\u00a0instead of a combination shape if this would be easier to read.<\/p>\n
