1. Month design<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Month\"<\/strong><\/span>The\u00a0development\u00a0process starts with the\u00a0client’s overall conceptual design for the calendar.\u00a0The first stage is to agree on\u00a0how each month table will look (example shown opposite)\u00a0and then on the\u00a0grid of months, set out to fit within the\u00a0overall design. The calendar insert will need to\u00a0match\u00a0the colours and fonts\u00a0in the shell document,\u00a0fit\u00a0into the space allocated and – most important – remain clear and legible at the planned viewing size.<\/p>\n

2. Shape Codes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Codes\"<\/strong><\/span>Having agreed on the overall design, shapes,\u00a0codes\u00a0and\u00a0colours for collections\u00a0are specified. These are set for\u00a0each of the unique collections separately as shown in the example opposite. The order in which they should appear on the key can also be chosen. In the case shown\u00a0there are two instances of the “W” code (for black bin \/ general waste) as the client had a mix of 7 day\u00a0and 14 day collections, so the entry appears twice – once for each.<\/p>\n

Note the use of shape codes (R<\/strong><\/span>ectangle, O<\/span><\/strong>val, H<\/strong><\/span>exagon and D<\/strong><\/span>iamond) to chose what symbol to show for each collection<\/p>\n

3. Combined-collection codes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"ComboOnce the main collections codes are\u00a0set, The system\u00a0generates suggested split colour shapes and codes for combinations of\u00a0 up to 5 collections that may all fall on the same day. The automatically generated “combo” codes don’t always produce satisfactory results so the system allows the standard shapes and colours to be substituted\u00a0to help improve legibility.<\/p>\n

Some examples are shown here including more complex shape codes like DSR<\/strong><\/span> (diagonal, slant right), 3C<\/strong><\/span> (3-colour), 3CH<\/strong><\/span> (3-colour, horizontal) 3SL<\/strong><\/span> (3-colour, slant\u00a0left), and DD<\/strong><\/span> (diamond-within-diamond).<\/p>\n

The symbols can be overlaid with the date, a nemonic code (as shown in the examples)\u00a0or left plain<\/p>\n

4. Outline codes<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Outline\"<\/strong><\/span>Outline codes\u00a0are used to add\u00a0a coloured border round any collection code falling on a specific day, where there may be a special collection arrangement. It’s also possible to\u00a0add an extra key symbol to explain what the highlight means.<\/p>\n

\"Outline<\/strong><\/span>In the example on the left, an outline code has been used to\u00a0show a bank holiday (18th April). This key on this calendar would include a yellow outline box, with a caption\u00a0that asks the user to check the local press \/ media for collection information for this day. This approach is useful if you know that collections\u00a0are likely\u00a0to change but you can’t specify the exact arrangements at the time of calendar distribution.<\/p>\n

5. Holiday rescheduling<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Reschedule<\/strong><\/span>The system can also show\u00a0collection rescheduling on public or bank holidays instead of using outline codes, if these operational arrangements are known in advance.\u00a0 The example shows a\u00a0typical\u00a0re-allocation. The\u00a026th December (Boxing day) collection has been moved to\u00a0Sunday 28th. Similar rescheduling could be shown for collections falling on Christmas day, New Years day and any other days, when re-scheduling\u00a0arrangements are known in advance.<\/p>\n
